Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. It occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently. It is an industrial mineral and a commercial product useful for its lightweightness after processing. Research suggests that more than 50 percent of expanded perlite worldwide is used by the construction industry. Perlite plays an important role in a wide variety of construction-related uses including: as an aggregate in lightweight insulating concrete and plaster; as a loose fill insulation material for concrete masonry blocks, cavity walls, in residential homes; and in a variety of specialty applications including fireproofing sprays, chimney fills, interstitial floors, acoustical sprays, etc. Perlite is also used as filter aids.Lightweight expanded perlite bubble structures are milled and classified using strictly defined processes to produce perlite filter aids with specific flow characteristics. The various grades utilize the jagged interlocking structures  to create billions of microscopic channels between the filter aid particles to produce optimum flow rates and clarification abilities for a wide variety of applications.Perlite is also used by foundry,horticulture,cryogenics and insulation industries.

SLAG REMOVER (Un-Expanded Perlite) is used for removing slag from Molten metal. It is in the form of Granules. It is used in Cupola Furnace, Induction Furnace & Pouring ladle.

Phenomenon of Expansion

When Slag Remover comes in contact with the metal, it reacts with the slag & starts coagulation i.e. formation of spongy agglomeration. The Coagulation depends on Expansion of Slag Remover.


  • Due to higher Expansion (18-24 cc).
  • Addition rate is 0. 15-0. 25% of liquid metal wt.
  • It improves the quality of Slag Coagulation & will help in minimizing rejection due to slag inclusion in house as well as after machining the castings.
  • Due to higher quality of Slag Coagulation, It increases the fluidity of liquid metal & reduces the temperature drop of liquid metal during pouring.

how to use 

Regulated quantity of Slag Conditioner is "Molten metal quantity X 0.05%” If the molten metal is 3tons, it will be 3,000 kg X 0.05% = 1.5kg.

1. Input the regulated quantity into furnace together with scrap.

Slag Conditioner will melt at 1100℃ and start to softening the slag on refractory lining.

2. Repeat input the requlated quantity of Slag Conditioner into furnace for 5 charges.

3. The slag on refractory lining will be gradually coming up to the surface of molten metal.

4. Take the floating slag out from the furnace.
